Waterproofing Market Demands Soaring High

Thanks to the rapid growth of real estate industry, China’s waterproofing market has been experiencing an exponential growth in the last few years. However, it was only warm-up exercise. The real battle is to come in the next few years.  

Ø                   20 Billion ㎡of Old Buildings Needing Renovation

In order to improve old urban district residents’ living conditions, the Chinese government proposed that by the end of the 13^th five-year plan, we need to accomplish the refurbishment and reformation of old city districts and shanty towns for 100 million residents. Waterproofing is explicitly pointed out as one of the key projects. There are now about 40 billion ㎡of old buildings in China, about half of which need all sorts of repair or renovation. It is estimated that the refurbishing work above will call for investments worth tens of billions of RMB.

Ø                   Thousands of Miles of Cable Duct Bank to Be Constructed

During the 13^th five-year plan, the construction of underground cable duct bank will bring about immense business opportunity for waterproofing industry. It is estimated that in 2016 alone, about 2,000 miles of cable duct bank will be built, attracting investment of approximately 240 billion RMB. And the ballpark figure of the area which is going to need waterproofing is 80 million ㎡. Since the whole project will cost about 500 billion RMB of financial subsidy that is too stressful for the local government to bear alone, enterprises with financial strength are welcome to take part in this tremendous project.

Ø                   Both Challenges and Opportunities in Prefabricated Houses

In 2015, national standards about waterproofing were introduced into house decoration. Waterproofing has become indispensable for every new house. And it is predicted that in the near future, challenges and opportunities can both be found in house industrialization. This February, the Chinese government expressed that in the next decade they would actively promote the construction of prefabricated houses and their aspiration was that prefabricated houses would account for 30% of all the newly built houses. Since waterproofing for prefabricated houses is different from the traditional kind, China’s waterproofing companies will need to channel their efforts in a new direction. However, immense opportunities are also waiting for them as their rewards.

Ø                   500 New Airports in Needs of Waterproofing

This May, the Chinese government issued guidance on the construction of transportation infrastructure, noting that by the end of 2020, 500 general airports will be built in China, attracting over 420 billion RMB of investment. The airport terminals of these 500 new airports will generate massive market demands for waterproofing. Not just waterproofing supplies, outstanding construction teams of waterproofing will also be sought after.

Though China’s market demands for waterproofing are  going to soar to an unprecedented height, its domestic waterproofing companies might not be able to live up to all the costumers’ expectations. Though China is one of the biggest producers of waterproofing supplies, compared with developed countries, China still needs to work on technological innovation and quality control.
